And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak,

2 Corinthians 4:13

We have been learning about confession of faith. We confess Jesus, a person and not things. We confess who He is, what He has done for us and what He means to us.

Hebrews 4:14 also says, Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. We must not give up confessing Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Hebrews 10:23 encourages us to ‘hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful’.

Faith and confession

In 2 Corinthians 4:13, Paul resonates with the Psalmist. He says that we have the same spirit of faith according to what is written. Even in the Old Testament, confession was important. Wherever there was faith, confession was present.

For e.g –When David faced Goliath, he spoke certain words. He told Goliath, a trained soldier, ‘I come to you in the name of the Lord God of Israel. You are an uncircumcised Philistine. I am going to cut your head off and feed it to the birds of the air. Not only yours but your entire army’s’. David recognized that he belonged to the Abrahamic Covenant. He was telling Goliath that he didn’t have any significance and he wasn’t afraid of him. He spoke of his identity and of his privileges. David killed him not with 5 stones but just one. Faith was victorious.

We have the same spirit. When we meet our giants today, we speak the same thing like David. We understand the blessedness of Jesus in our life. We belong to the new covenant. We must never speak weakness or what the devil can do. We must believe and speak.

Why is confession so important?

  • Confession reveals our position both spiritually and naturally. It shows where we are presently. We can identity our spiritual condition.
  • Confession sets the boundaries of our life. It will tell us how far we will go. It tells us whether we will make it or not.
  • Confession reveals who rules over our lives. We give dominion to God or devil by our confession. If we confess God and his Word, the entire heavenly machinery backs us. If we speak the devils word, we open the door for the devil to enter our lives.

When a person talks, we get to know what he believes. Similarly, if we listen to our speech, it will show us what we believe. A believer believes God’s Word and what He has said.

When a person confesses weakness and failure, it is an indication that his belief is wrong. He believes that he can’t win. There’s a fundamental problem in what he believes. It shows he is not a spiritual person. He will not last long. He is opening the door to let the devil come in and rule him.

The devil is displeased that we have been saved. So he wants to destroy us and not let us accomplish God’s purposes in our lives. Paul strongly writes about being on guard against the devil. He says that we must put on the armor of God. He warns that the enemy is out there. The devil cannot enter our life without permission.

God too does not enter our life without our permission. Jesus says, ‘Behold I stand at the door and knock. If any man opens, I will come in. I will sup with him and he with me’. Why should Jesus knock? He is all powerful, but He does not kick the door open. He has given us a will to open the gate of our life. Our will is like the compound wall of our life. Adam and Eve used that will to allow the devil to enter into their life. The devil even complained to God about Job, ‘you have blessed him and not only have you blessed him, but you have also put a hedge around him’. A hedge is made of man’s will.

We can exercise our will and refuse to let failure into our life. The devil robs our will, making us incapable of exercising our will. God, however, frees us and gives us a free will. We can determine to follow God and succeed in life.

If our mind and heart are not renewed by the Word of God, wrong beliefs set in. Ultimately, it is reflected in our speech.
