(A summary of the Sunday morning teaching on 01-Mar-2015, in AFT Church, English service. From the series The Law of Faith)

There are physical laws and spiritual laws. Faith is a spiritual law. Confession is an important aspect of the law of faith. Faith always works with confession. Another similar law is the law of agreement. The spiritual and natural laws work parallelly. Law of faith and the law of agreement work like that.

Today’s reflection is on a law that is related to confession. It is the Law of seedtime and harvest. When we speak, we are employing that law. Every word we speak is a seed that goes into our heart soil and produces a harvest.

Establishment of the Law of seedtime and harvest

Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:11, 12

God made the earth bring forth grass, herbs and fruit yielding trees. These plants had to function in a certain way. There are two aspects to this law –

  • The seed to produce more is within the tree or fruit.
  • It should produce more of its own kind.

God made the plant, determined the way it should be and then He said that ‘it was good’. What was good? That the seed must be in itself and that it should produce after its own kind.

Spiritual dimension of the law of seedtime and harvest

This is not just an agricultural law. It holds true in the spiritual level too. Seedtime and harvest are real in every realm of life.

E.g- Strife happens at home, in a marriage, church, company, country and even between nations. This strife comes from itself. Somebody sowed the seed and now the results are being produced. Bitterness, evil, ill-will, animosity, anger and hatred towards one another comes out when we open our mouths. Once we stop the speaking strife, then the strife cannot get any more life to continue. It will slowly die out and disappear. Starve the strife and feed the unity. The same principle applies to loving and giving as well. Sow and we shall reap.

The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground,27 and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how.

Mark 4:26, 27

In verse 14 of the same chapter, He interprets the parable of the sower. The Sower sows the Word on four different types of soil. If the soil is the heart and the seed is the Word of God, then we are the Sowers. We sow the Word by speaking it. Every time we open our mouths and speak something, we are sowing seed into our heart. When we speak words of insufficiency and failure, we are sowing those seeds into our hearts. In the above verse, Jesus is referring to the Kingdom of God. It’s like a man who casts seed in the ground, went to sleep and woke up to find that whatever he sowed had sprouted in manifestation of what he had sown.

Science of one to many

God didn’t give us this law to make us fail. He gave us this so that we can produce what we want. If a man likes some fruit and wants more of it, he can plant more. There are good things that we like, we can produce more of it in an unlimited fashion. If we start with one grain of wheat, there might not be enough to make even one chapatti but if we keep on sowing and reaping, eventually we will have enough wheat to feed the whole world. We can start with one and end up with a whole lot. In some countries, people are told not to produce any more because there is no place to store the abundance. When God planted trees, herbs and grass, He meant for them to be produced in an uninterrupted manner so that man would have no lack. God didn’t intend for any lack or insufficiency in spirit or soul or body. In the Garden of Eden, there was plenty.

How does this Law operate?

Every farmer understands that just because he sows doesn’t mean he will reap. But he also understands that if he doesn’t even sow, then he has no chance of reaping at all. Planting or Sowing is essential.

There is life in the seed. When we sow, there is life in it. When we plant a seed, the kind of quality of the seed is the kind of quality that we will get in the fruit or vegetable. If we want the best life, we can’t get it other from the Word of God. Jesus died on the Cross for us, in order to give us the best life.

This law is like other law. It has merits and demerits. For example, electricity means power. Power to serve us, do us good and give us light. But it can end up being bad, if we ignore the precautions. The law of sowing and reaping is just like electricity. It can harm us or do us good. God created everything for our good. The power in the words of our mouth was meant to do us good. But since the fall, man now uses it for evil more than good. He speaks and destroys everything, he kills everything.

Why are words such an integral part of Christian life?

Keep my commands and live, and my law as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

Proverbs 7:2, 3

The Bible says that we must keep God’s Word as the apple of our eye. If we want to live, we must bind it and write it on our hearts. ‘To live’ means to succeed, flourish and win. God has given us His Word so that we may win and not run into failure. We have to give the Word the first place.

My heart is overflowing with a good theme;
I recite my composition concerning the King;
My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

Psalm 45:1

The Psalmist envisions the tongue as a pen. We take that tongue and write it on our hearts. When we speak the Word of God with our tongue, we begin to write on our heart. Our mouth is like the finger that holds the pen. Our mouth holds the Word of God. When we write it on our heart, we live.

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

John 6:63

The Bible is Spirit and life. Even though they come on paper and have black and white letters, they are Spirit and Life. God means it to get into our hearts and quicken us with these words. It will clear our mind, show us the way and fill us with wisdom. So this life gets transmitted to us by the Word of God. Paul says faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. When we keep on hearing the Word, there is a transmission that takes place. The life and Spirit of the Word is transmitted to us. We can transmit a lot of images and pictures through the words we use to describe. God’s words are Spirit and Life and it transmits to us the life that is in the Word.

Heart as the supply of the Word

We are meant to live from inside out. We are generally used to thinking that external circumstances decide our life and our future. But the Bible says that things that are outside of us can’t do anything to us. Everything that we have today comes from the inside. Our heart is the soil where everything is produced. We will become something based on what we have planted and sowed in our hearts.

My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

Proverbs 4:20-23

Why should we guard our heart? Because the heart supplies all our needs. Jacob realized that his father-in-law wanted everything that he had. He wanted to send Jacob home empty. But Jacob found out how to succeed against crooks. He produced the sheep he wanted by getting a picture of what he wanted. He cut some sticks from the tree and designed the kind of sheep that he wanted. He put the stick in front of the sheep that wanted water. He believed it and ended up producing exactly what was impossible for him to produce.

There are many people out there to destroy us. In order to succeed in the world, we need God and His Word. We can be victorious against all odds. How? By putting the Word in our hearts. How do we do that? By speaking it. When we confess what we will be and what our tomorrow will be through Jesus, it will be produced.

Conception takes place. Mary received the Word and she said ‘May it be unto me according to your Word’. And the Word became flesh in her. When we receive the Word, we must confess it and agree with God.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

Galatians 6:7

Even though it a different context, the principle of sowing and reaping applies here too. It is the law of seedtime and harvest. It is possible by the words of our mouth to reap corruption or blessing, death or life, bad things or good things. Jesus said a good man brings forth good things and a bad man brings forth bad things. Let us not become weary for in due season, even doing good is like reaping. There is a due date for everything. A coconut tree takes 4 years to bear fruit. If we take the Word of God and plant the seed in our heart, there will be a due season.

When we begin to confess, we begin to have expectations. We will be excited. We will get a picture in our heart of what we are going to get. When we take the Word of God, speak it and then conception takes place. When we conceive, there is a due date and we will reap good harvest.
